BIOGRAPHY

Konrad Zeuner was born in Hanau, Germany, in 1841. He apprenticed to a jeweler and worked as an engraver and goldsmith in Paris for nearly twenty years. In 1881 he married a French woman in a small village outside Paris. That same year, both were enrolled as patients in mental hospitals; whether they met and were married before or after being institutionalized is unclear. Eventually Zeuner's wife recovered but Zeuner remained in insane asylums (with schizophrenia) in Marburg and Haina for the rest of his life. He died in the hospital at Haina in 1919.
