BIOGRAPHY

Melvin "Milky" Way was born in South Carolina in 1954 and moved with his family to New York City in the early 1960s. Like all four of his brothers, Way was musically talented and played woodwinds and percussion in his high school orchestra, and later in various jazz and R&B groups. After leaving school, he worked as an industrial machinist and chauffeur, but recurring mental problems gradually left him with a sense of isolation and dislocation. Since the 1970s, Way has lived in homeless shelters and SROs (single-room occupancy housing). When he began taking art classes intended for hospital patients, an instructor recognized his cryptic schematic drawings as complex symbolic diagrams, and brought it to the attention of a major gallery which now represents his work.
