BIOGRAPHY
Philip
Travers was born in New York City in 1914 and began
drawing as a child. In 1940 he enrolled in a course
taught by George Grosz at the Art Students League
but lasted less than one session. He studied showcard
design and sign painting, worked as a nurse and research
chemist, and worked in a photo lab and photo portrait
studio. In 1984 he began producing a series of meticulously
drawn and annotated story spreads he calls "The
Tut Project." While their serialized story line
is often given over to seemingly random commentary,
Travers maintains that each diversion is purposeful
and that astrological relationships determine much
of what happens. He is careful to repeat particular
details whenever he makes copy drawings of his originals.
Throughout these baffling chronicles, main characters
like Alice (of Alice in Wonderland) and King Tut reappear
with others representing Mistaire Travaire, Travers's
French alter ego. Walt Disney's Pinocchio and Jiminy
Cricket (apparently also personal symbols for Travers
himself), as well as biblical or mythological figures
and characters drawn from advertising and popular
culture, show up in the series from time to time as
well. Travers produces most of his work at a seniors
center in Manhattan.
