BIOGRAPHY
John
Sowell was born on a farm in Grass Valley, California,
in 1864, and grew up in the foothills of the Sierras
during an era of active pioneering and exploration.
While still a young man, Sowell worked in Nevada and
California as a mining engineer, prospector, farmer,
clerk, and machinist, but it was modern warfare, the
discovery of machine-powered flight, and the development
of energy sources that excited him most after the
First World War broke out. In 1918 he wrote a treatise
on the future of aeronautics, and spent much of the
latter half of his life creating inventions related
to both aviation and perpetual motion. The date and
place of his death are unknown.
