BIOGRAPHY

McKendree Long, son of Judge Benjamin Long, was born in Statesville, North Carolina, in 1888 and educated at Horner Military Academy in Oxford (NC), and at Davidson College. After Davidson, he attended art classes at the Art Students League in New York. He won a scholarship for study in Europe, where he learned an academic style of portrait painting. After returning to the United States, he worked as a professional portraitist in North Carolina and New York, interrupted by a stint in the army during the First World War. In his thirties, Long abandoned his professional art career and in 1922 was ordained a Presbyterian minister. He returned to the South where he eventually became an evangelist. In his seventies, Reverend Long began painting again in a style that marked a dramatic difference in approach from his academic portraiture. There have yet to be any major exhibitions of Long's work, although it seems certain Long will emerge as one of the most important visionary artists North Carolina has yet produced. He died in 1976.
