BIOGRAPHY
Charles
Keeling Lassiter lives and works alone in a tiny fifth-floor
walk-up apartment above a grocery store on 74th Street
in Manhattan. Although fairly well-known in Switzerland
where he has traveled frequently over the past several
decades, in the United States he has lived an almost
marginal existence, rarely emerging from his crowded
studio/living space except to see movies and take
walks. Lassiter was born of French Huguenot ancestry
in New York City in 1926. He studied sociology at
Yale University and art education at New York University,
and has painted full-time since 1951. He remains,
he says, "adventurous and insolent in a parallel
world" and pursues his art single-mindedly as
a form of "self-reliance, [and as] an avoidance
of outside authority."
