BIOGRAPHY
Robert
Gie was born in 1869 in Soleure, Switzerland, where
he became a carpenter. An alcoholic with a history
of mental troubles, some time before 1908 (when he
was institutionalized at the Hospital de la Rosegg)
Gie began experiencing corporeal hallucinations which
he experienced as "emanations" endangering
or emerging from his bodily openings, and which he
attempted to draw, for a time in 1909 and again in
1916. In all he spent fourteen years in a mental institution,
occasionally behaving violently but often existing
only in a catatonic state, escaping once, and finally
being officially released in 1922. What happened to
him afterwards is not known.
