Lee Boas: New York Sex 1979-1985
|
From the late 70s through the early 80s, Gary Lee Boas
(Starstruck: Photographs from a Fan,
Dilettante Press) spent much of his time in New York City, obsessively
photographing famous people and collecting autographs. Boas’
“off” time, however, was consumed in the strip joints,
bath houses and sex clubs flourishing on 42nd Street and in downtown
Manhattan. As a fan and voyeur, Boas documented the local dancers,
porn stars, street hustlers, ordinary individuals and the most
celebrated sex personalities of the era.
Hedi El Kholti partnered with Mennour Editions in Paris to produce
the 240-page deluxe monograph of Boas’ photographs titled
Gary Lee Boas: New York Sex 1979-1985.
The book presents these images accompanied by Boas’ detailed
personal accounts of the times and people he encountered. Together
they reveal an astonishing and intensely personal document of
post-Stonewall, pre-AIDS urban American sexuality.

| Art
from the Lodge Hall
|

Members of secret societies and fraternal organizations such as
the Freemasons, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias have produced
some of the most mysterious and elusive art in America. Bruce
and Julie Webb, long-time collectors of lodge art, recently
mounted an extraordinary exhibition at the Webb Gallery in Waxahachie,
Texas. Dilettante presents an on-line
gallery of images and a brief
history of American Fraternal art, written by Bruce Webb.

Islam: Anti-American Propaganda Art |
|
Illustrated, anti-Western propaganda is the pop art of the Middle
East--plastered onto postage stamps, money, periodicals and village
walls. Adam
Parfrey's recent book, Extreme
Islam: Anti-America Propaganda of Muslim Fundamentalism (Feral House), allows the voices of Islamic militancy to speak
for themselves, featuring essays, interviews, poems, and a collection
of images nearly impossible to find in the western world. Dilettante
Press presents a full-color online
gallery of selected images, as well as a review
of the book by Blag
Dahlia.
